Cabaret is set in 1929-1930 Berlin, Germany during the twilight of the jazz age, in the beginning of the Third Reich. The musical focuses on the hedonistic night life at the luring Kit Kat Club and revolves around American novelist Clifford Bradshaw’s relations with British cabaret performer Sally Bowles.

Character Descriptions and Breakdowns:

Master of Ceremonies (Emcee)   ●  The host at the Kit Kat Club. A gender-nonconforming-presenting, exuberant figure; comfortable with being close to the audience; dark, comedic, sinister,   vulgar…yet lovable and welcoming; requires a strong presence that is playful   and mysterious. Must act, sing (some in German), move well, and be comfortable with bawdy/suggestive staging/choreography.   ●  Age Range: 20-40   ●  Accent: German   ●  Vocal range top: C#5   ●  Vocal range bottom: C3

Sally Bowles   ●  A British cabaret singer at the Kit Kat Club. Quirky, flighty, and complicated.   Struggles with knowing the darkness of the reality of her life and has woeful luck in her relationships with men. Must act, sing, and dance well; comfortable with moments of intimacy and bawdy/suggestive staging/choreography.   ●  Age Range: 21-35   ●  Accent: British   ●  Vocal range top: C5   ●  Vocal range bottom: A3

Clifford Bradshaw  (Cliff)  ●  A struggling American novelist and English tutor traveling to Berlin. Through his journey he explores the many facets and complexities of his sexuality,  politics, and artistic goals. He is relatable, hopeful, and smitten with the intoxication of the thriving nightlife in Berlin. Must act and sing well, comfortable with stage movement, light dance, and moments of intimacy.  ●  Age Range: 25-35  ●  Accent: American  ●  Vocal range top: E4  ●  Vocal range bottom: A2

Fräulein Schneider  ●  A landlady who rents rooms to Cliff, Sally, and several other characters in her large flat. She is alone and is resigned to her place in life, but secretly longs  for companionship. She is very critical of some people while looking the other way with others; comfortable with stage movement and light dance (waltz).  Must act and sing well; comfortable with moments of intimacy.  ●  Age Range: Late 40s to 60s  ●  Accent: German  ●  Vocal range top: A flat 4  ●  Vocal range bottom: D3

Herr Schultz  ●  A Jewish fruit shop owner who falls in love with  Fräulein  Schneider; sweet,  lovable, and adoring; heartbreakingly naïve about the political turmoil in Germany. Must act and sing well; comfortable with stage movement, light dance (waltz), and moments of intimacy.  ●  Age Range: Late 40s to 60s  ●  Accent: German  ●  Vocal range top: High F  ●  Vocal range bottom: Low G

Ernst Ludwig  ●  A friendly and likable German, takes English lessons from Cliff, and smuggles  funds for the Nazi party; comfortable with stage movement and light dance  (waltz); and sings in German.  ●  Age Range: 21-40  ●  Accent: German  ●  Vocal range top: High F  ●  Vocal range bottom: A flat

Fräulein Kost  (Fritzie)  ●  A prostitute/ Kit Kat girl who rents in  Fräulein Schneider's boarding house;  larger than life personality, quick witted and sharp tongued; should be comfortable exhibiting a strong sexual and commanding nature; must act and move well and sing in German.  ●  Age Range: 25-40  ●  Accent: German  ●  Vocal range top: High F  ●  Vocal range bottom: A flat

The Kit Kat Ensemble  ●  These performers are often in salacious situations and costumes. They are an eclectic mix of individuals and aren’t necessarily a matching unit. It is very important they act, sing, dance/move well and with confidence. They will be  part of various scenes in and out of the Club; should be comfortable  interacting with the audience and comfortable with bawdy/suggestive staging/choreography; also sing in German accent.  ●  Rosie  ●  Lulu  ●  Frenchie  ●  Texas  ●  Fritzie/ Frau Kost  ●  Helga  ●  Bobby  ●  Victor  ●  Herman  ●  Hans  ●  Age 17+

How did L. Frank Baum's own life's journey lead him to the creation of what is arguably the most beloved children's novel of all time, The Wonderful Wizard of OZ? From his youth in 19th century upstate New York, to his travels on the road as an actor and playwright, to his stint as a newspaper publisher on the midwestern plains, to his time in turn-of-the- 20th century Chicago as a salesman and ultimately a published author, L. Frank Baum's adventurous biography is nothing less than remarkable. Finding OZ is an inspiring new play that brings his imaginative journey and personal story to life on stage.

Roles:

Frank:    Male, 50s-70s; the older L. Frank Baum, the play’s narrator

Actor 1:   Female, 20s-30s; plays Dorothy, Sheila, Susan B. Anthony, Kenneth Baum, etc.

Actor 2:   Any Gender, 20s-50s; plays Tin Woodman, Uncle Adam, Robert Baum, Mr. Williams, etc.

Actor 4:   Male, 30s-60s; Benjamin Baum, Wizard, Uncle Henry, Mr. Clover, Mr. Comstock, etc.

Actor 5:   Female; 30s-60s; plays Cynthia Baum, Matilda Gage, Aunt Em, Mrs. Bilkins, Guardian, etc.

Actor 6:   Male, 20s-40s; plays Frankie, the younger L. Frank Baum from a young boy to early 40s, etc.

Actor 7:   Any Gender, 20s-50s; plays Cowardly Lion, Frank Baum Jr., Mr. Denslow, etc.

Actor 8:   Female, 20s-50s; plays Glinda, Schoolmaster, Maud Baum, etc.

With the exceptions of “Frank” and “Actor 6,” all of the actors will play a variety of characters from the life and imagination of L. Frank Baum throughout the play. The play is an ensemble piece, and most actors will be onstage most of the time.

Auditions will consist of readings of scenes from the script. Audition scenes will be available
